Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills

May 8, 2014:  7:00 PM – 9:00 PM (Thursday)

May 30 – 31, 2014:  6:00 PM Friday – 8:30 PM Saturday

Cost: $40.00 (includes handouts, camping, and food)

Mandatory Patrol Planning Meeting: Thursday, May 8, 2014, 7PM – 9PM

Note: The patrol planning meeting will be to provide information participants need to  know for the upcoming weekend camping experience and delivers some course content.  This is also the time for participants to meet their fellow patrol members, come up with a patrol name, cheer, flag, elect a patrol leader, assign other patrol roles, and plan their meals.  IOLS models the patrol method; therefore, the planning meeting is mandatory.

About IOLS: Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) is an essential part of the basic training for adult leaders in Boy Scout Troops and Venturing Crews with an outdoor program.  This training is required for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters, Venturing Crew Advisors and Associate Advisors with Crews that have an outdoor program, and is recommended for interested Troop or Crew Committee Members who may participate in the outdoor program.  Additionally, any interested Cub Scout leader (Cubmaster, Assistant Cubmaster, Webelos Den Leader, etc.) who is transitioning to the Boy Scout program is welcome to participate.

GM Scouts Honoring our Fallen Veterans

MemorialDayCelebrate Memorial Day by joining the George Mason District Venturers, Troops, and Packs  for “Flags-in”; placing American Flags on the graves of fallen Veterans.

The Scouts will be gathering in the parking lot at The National Memorial Park, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA 22042 on Monday, 26 May 2014. Please wear your Class A uniform.

Girl Scouts Welcome

Memorial Day Schedule:       0830-0900 – arrival and sign-in

                                              0915 – Opening & flag placement training

                                              0930 – begin flag placement

                                              1000, 1100, 1200 & 1300 – TAPS to blown

                                              1130 – Pizza Lunch

                                              1230 – Probable completion of event

Training by Crew 976 will include proper method to place flags and walking the rows of graves. 

 

On Memorial Day 2013 approximately 95 Scouts plus parents and Scouters from our District participated in this patriotic activity.  Scout service hours, (3hrs) patches and rockers will be available.  Cemetery Staff will supply flags, drinks, and a pizza lunch.  MSG Roussey, SM, Pack 661, has volunteered to blow TAPS; other buglers welcome.  Class-A uniforms. 

 

Note: Falls Church City Schools and Fairfax County Schools are on holiday Monday.
